Rubin

The project documents were sent over to the production facilities in 2003.

The mass production of Rubin 37M10-8 began in 2004.

Objective

Our objective was to create a reasonably priced portable television designed for a specific target audience which includes students and summer home owners.

Solution

There are two important characteristics that describe the 14-inch television market segment. First, it has a seasonal demand and, second, there are almost no world-famous brands at the national market. The main manufacturers featured in this segment of the Russian market are Chinese and Taiwanese companies. In terms of their design, televisions produced by these companies can be termed as false high-technology goods.

Talking about our design strategy, we tried to avoid using excessive elements in the product’s design, which could create the impression of high complexity. So we chose to move the control elements from the front panel to the top surface. The power button and the RCA connectors, however, were placed on the front panel, which helped easily connect the television to a video camera, a tape recorder or a DVD player. There is also a clock on the face panel, which can work non-stop or in the standby mode, based on the user settings. The Rubin 37M10-8 model is also equipped with on and off timers as well as an alarm clock.

The initial assumption was that this television would be often moved from one place to another, so the front panel was fitted with a specially designed fully ergonomic folding handle. The position of the handle helps evenly distribute the weight of the television during transportation. The handle does not protrude out of the television frame, when folded, which makes transportation much easier.

The product’s mobility was the underlying concern for the creation of a special cover to protect the lower part of the frame from impact damage (when the television is put on a surface). For this purpose, the front angles were covered with caps made as separate parts. It should be noted, however, that it was more of a smart design move, which created the sense of greater reliability.

Advantages

The product had a long life cycle because Rubin 37M10-8’s market life was five years.

The design solution which used the clock indicator on the front panel proved to be a success. Since the television was most often used in small rooms or houses (such as a dormitory room or a summer house), this alternative to a stationary clock or alarm clock received positive feedback from our customers.
